Both the audience and the characters in the performance are fooled into believing certain things about the show's events. The more compelling story serves as the foundation for this illusion, and the clever plot turns are the icing on the cake.
The writers have also taken great care to introduce these surprises at the most appropriate moments. They may have been intimidating, but the only response to their discovery is astonishment.
