World War Z 2: Has It Been Renewed Or Canceled?

World War Z was released seven years ago, and it's been almost as long since it was reported that Paramount was working on a sequel to the film.

The zombie film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Max Brooks, was an unexpected blockbuster at the box office, grossing more than $500 million in total revenue throughout the world. Why hasn't a sequel been released yet, although there was a market for it?

Perhaps, like with the previous film, a troublesome development phase will finally lead to the production of a legitimate follow-up film. It appears, however, to be a long shot at the moment, and we regret having to say this about it.

However, don't give up hope! In January 2020, co-producer Jeremy Kleiner stated that a sequel to the film might become a reality “someday.”

“Max Brooks' novel is one of our favorites. We adore the cosmos that it has created. It doesn't feel like World War Z is over and done with, at least not yet “He explained himself in a way that is ambiguous enough to make us hopeful that World War Z 2 will occur at some point in the future.

What day that will be is still up in the air, but the sequel, like the zombies in the original film, might rise from the dead, and if that happens, it will have had a long road to get to the big screen.

Is World War Z 2 Still on Track for Release?

There was a period when the sequel was expected to be released in 2017, however that date came and went without any progress being made on the project.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star Brad Pitt joined the cast, and the film was pushed back to the fall of 2018. Production was then planned to begin in the fall of 2018.

Following that, there was yet another delay, this time due to director David Fincher's work on Mindhunter season two, which resulted in production being scheduled to begin in June 2019 instead, with the start date then being brought ahead to March.

Yet another delay has been announced for the sequel, with Paramount having halted pre-production on the film, reportedly due to China's ban on zombie movies, making a sequel a risky proposition. China, one of the world's largest movie markets, has a ban on zombie films, making a sequel a risky proposition.

Consequently, as of right now, the sequel is as dead as a zombie that has been shot in the head, but you never know when it could be brought back to life.

If a sequel is produced, Brad Pitt has agreed to return to his main role as former United Nations investigator and intrepid zombie fighter Gerry Lane. However, whether or not a production date is determined will determine whether or not Pitt will reprise his starring role.

In May 2016, Mireille Enos stated that she will reprise her role as Karin Lane, the husband of the main character. It's unclear where things are now, nearly four years after the events of the film, and, unfortunately, no new casting has been revealed.

To avoid spoilers for the sequel, keep in mind that the original film was based on the bestseller novel of the same name by writer Max Brooks (who happens to be the son of Anne Bancroft and Mel Brooks, FYI), making predictions about its narrative difficult.

The first film, which took place all over the world, concluded with a ray of hope for mankind's survival against the zombie hordes, but as Gerry Lane points out at the film's conclusion, there is still much work to be done.

The novel, whose tale spans the world and stretches into a political future that has been significantly altered by the zombie plague, has plenty of material for the filmmakers to work with.

“A lot of foundational stones have been placed,” Fincher said in November 2017. The team is currently dissecting the mythology that exists to determine where they can go from here.

According to where they left off, the survivors of humanity had developed a way to travel “unseen” among the infected – by infecting themselves with lethal but treatable viruses – but the earth had remained overrun.

We'd expect to witness the beginning of the fightback in World War Z 2, but whether or not that fightback will ever truly begin remains to be seen.

Just in case it wasn't apparent enough before, the sequel hasn't even been given the green light, let alone begun production so that we can get a trailer for it out there.

We're certain that if and when filming begins, we'll be able to obtain some video if only to demonstrate that it is indeed taking place.
