Development

Ice Age 2 screenwriter, Jim Hecht, visited the home of sportswriter Jeff Pearlman on April 20, 2014, after flying across the nation from his home in California. He offered an adaption of Pearlman's best-selling Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty in the spirit of Friday Night Lights.

It was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Hecht presented Pearlman with a bottle of non-alcoholic wine, some chocolate, and a tomato in exchange for the novel's rights. As a result, if he said “$30,000,” Hecht recalls having been duped.

In exchange for a year of exclusivity, Pearlman agreed to allow Hecht to advertise his book in the neighbourhood. The pilot was directed and produced by actor Adam McKay, who also starred in it.

HBO authorised a pilot episode for the series in April 2019, which was written by Max Borenstein and based on a plot developed by Borenstein and Hecht. The original title of the show was Showtime, after Pearlman's novel and the Lakers era that served as inspiration for it.

Showtime is one of HBO's primary competitors in the premium television and streaming markets. Casey Bloys later stated that the term would have caused confusion in the market because one of HBO's largest competitors is known as Showtime. HBO acquired a television programme in December.

Winning Time Season 2

Bloys believes the film will be titled Winning Time: The Rise of the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty, and that is exactly what it will be called. McKay and Will Ferrell had a falling out during the filming of the movie because McKay preferred John C. Reilly to Ferrell.
