The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a Netflix and Jim Henson Company fantasy streaming television series set in the United States. It’s a prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal, and it delves into the realm of Thra, which was created for the original film. Rian, Deet, and Brea are three Gelflings on a quest to unify the Gelfling clans in order to rise up against the oppressive Skeksis and save home planet Thra from a terrible scourge known as the Darkening. The series launched to critical praise on August 30, 2019. The series was announced to be terminated after one season in September 2020.
How The First Season Was Made?
The project was originally envisioned as a feature-length sequel to The Dark Crystal dubbed The Power of the Dark Crystal, but it languished in development purgatory for years. In 2012, shortly after the release of Clash of the Titans, director Louis Leterrier expressed interest in joining Jim Henson Productions in their project, hoping to interest large studios, but was repeatedly turned down because, according to him, they were only interested in Transformers, and many executives had never heard of The Dark Crystal. Because of the wealth of material available in Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s notes on the eve of the film’s release, Leterrier decided to shoot a prequel series rather than a cinematic sequel during this deadlock.
Lisa Henson was the one who saw it “As a “starting point,” use “Wall of Destiny” from the original film: “What was that culture? What was it that was lost? What was the name of that lovely Gelfling civilization?” Following that, fans of The Dark Crystal Jeff Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo Marxuach were hired as writers. After Leterrier found a studio executive who shared the team’s passion for the original picture, the property was eventually sold to Netflix.
Netflix was offered the project as an animated prequel series. Vice President of Original Content Cindy Holland rewatched the film after hearing about the premise and enquired about the prospect of creating the series in live-action, much to the astonishment of the Henson Company. In 2016, a short test film starring a puppet Skeksis and a CGI Gelfling was released to see if the series could improve on the film. The test eventually persuaded the Henson Company and Netflix that the show required puppet characters.
