In Boulder, Colorado, police first believed that Patsy and John faked the scene to avoid being found responsible for JonBenét's death, even though a ransom note was left for the Ramsey family at the time of her death.

Burke, JonBenét's elder brother, was thereafter viewed as a suspect by the public because of rumors that he had hit his sister with a golf club. In the years since JonBenét's passing, he has denied any culpability, although he was never named as an official suspect in the case.

The DA's office dropped the Ramseys from the investigation after DNA testing in 2002 revealed the remains of JonBenét had the DNA of an unidentified male. The Boulder Police Department revived the case seven years later.

A man by the name of Alexis Val Reich (then known as John Mark Karr) made up a confession in 2006, claiming to have killed JonBenét. The arrest took place in Bangkok, Thailand. Authorities discovered no DNA match at the crime scene, despite his confession.
