The Dutton family's backstory is fleshed out in ‘1923,' a prequel to ‘Yellowstone' from Paramount+. Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) gives up his hunting career in Africa and gets ready to return home in the sixth episode.
After Spencer's attempts to book a berth on a ship fall through, he has no choice but to take a tugboat that will transport him to the Suez Canal. Spencer encounters the tugboat's captain, who is, to put it mildly, an unusual character, on his way.
If the tugboat captain's charismatic presence in “1923” left you wanting to learn more about him, here it is! WAIT! THERE WILL BE SPOILERS AHEAD.
Who is Lucca?
In the fifth episode of “1923,” titled “Ghost of Zebrina,” Spencer returns to his hometown after learning of the tragedy that has befallen his family. As they look for a way to the States, Spencer and Alexandra encounter many obstacles. However, there is no ship that can take them to America.
Therefore, they had no choice but to travel to London, England. It's unfortunate that the ship bound for London is not female-friendly. Therefore, Spencer needs to look for an alternate means of transportation. A while later, Spencer meets Lucca, the tugboat's captain.
Lucca is a seasoned mariner who runs a tugboat that sails from Nairobi, Kenya to the Suez Canal. Lucca needs to get some helpers to work on the deck while he sails. Spencer proposes compensation to Lucca and offers to take the deckhand position. Lucca agrees to drop Spencer off at the Suez Canal so that Spencer can travel to London.
Spencer and Alexandra are about to take a sail with Lucca. After preventing the tugboat from colliding with a “ghost ship,” Lucca explains the notion to the young couple during their journey. Spencer, though, is aware that Lucca is ill, and he suspects that Lucca has tuberculosis. When Lucca finally succumbs to his illness, it's up to Spencer and Alexandra to take control of the tugboat.

Lucca’s Life Experiences
Lucca has lived on the water for as long as he can remember, giving him a wealth of seafaring tales and insights to offer. He informs Spencer that he was the captain of a liner converted into a hospital and that's how he knew Spencer's wound was caused by mustard gas.
He then goes on to explain the abandoned ships to Spencer and Alexandra when they see one. These vessels are known as “ghost ships” since they are piloted by no one. He spends the day relating tales of his experiences with various kinds of ghost ships. While he sleeps at night, Spencer and Alexandra learn the ropes of operating the tugboat from him.
How Did Lucca Die?
By the end of Spencer and Alexandra's shift, Spencer had discovered blood on Lucca's pillow and handkerchief. In the end, he determines that Lucca's bloody cough is the cause of his illness.
Although Spencer opts not to wake him, Lucca spontaneously arises. As Spencer thinks Lucca needs to relax, he offers to take his watch. To Lucca's chagrin, he hears this and immediately reminds the man that the boat is his and that he alone is in charge.
When Spencer finally comes hours later, he finds that the boat's engines are silent. When he goes to see how Lucca is doing, he discovers that he has passed away; he is covered in blood from his coughing.
Spencer and Alexandra are in danger because of what happened to Lucca. There is nothing but water all around them, and no one to steer the tugboat to dry land.
