Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed filmmaker behind some of the most iconic and mind-bending movies of our time, is a figure shrouded in mystery both on and off the screen.
While fans are familiar with his cinematic masterpieces, such as “Inception,” “The Dark Knight Trilogy,” and “Interstellar,” there's often curiosity about the man behind the camera, particularly when it comes to his personal life, including his marriage.
So who is Christopher Nolan married to? Here’s everything to know about his wife and her relationship with the director.
Who is Christopher Nolan married to?
Christopher Nolan married Emma Thomas in 1997, a year before the premiere of his first feature picture, “Following.”
In 1989, Nolan and Thomas met in the same residence hall at University College London (UCL), where he studied English literature and she studied ancient history. Later on, the two co-led the university's film society.
Their relationship is still going strong. According to People, Thomas and her husband attended the New York City premiere of “Oppenheimer” in July 2023. Thomas is no stranger to red carpets, as she routinely appears alongside Nolan at movies and events.
Who is Emma Thomas?
Thomas was born in London in 1971, and her father worked for the civil service, so she spent part of her youth in the Middle East.
In January 2024, Thomas told Variety that she needed to be fearless about her work after a “very awkward lunch with [her] father.”
He gave Thomas civil service pamphlets after she graduated from college, but she informed him she wanted to pursue filmmaking and took an unpaid job with Working Title Films instead.
While doing so, she and Nolan were filming their first feature-length film, Following, on weekends, which launched one of Hollywood's most successful collaborations.
The duo owns Syncopy Inc., a production firm based in London and Los Angeles. Its name, which Nolan's late father suggested, is a play on the word “syncopate.”

Nolan is widely regarded as one of the best directors of all time, and Thomas is his principal partner in both life and film. According to Deadline, after accepting one of his DGA Awards, he even referred to her as his “artist and life partner.”
Thomas produced all 12 feature films directed by Nolan, including his early short films, commencing with Doodlebug in 1997.

Emma has four kids with Nolan.
Flora, their first child, was born shortly after Nolan and Thomas founded their production company, Syncopy Inc., in 2001. Following her, they celebrated the birth of three sons, Oliver, Rory, and Magnus.
