Bill Maher: Career
After getting his B.A. in 1978, Maher started going to clubs all over the country. He also made a lot of appearances on “The Tonight Show,” which got the attention of Steve Allen, who put him in “Steve Allen's Music Room” as his sidekick. Maher tried his hand at acting in 1983.
He was in a few movies and TV shows. Maher's career took off when he co-hosted the show “Indecision '92” on the cable network Comedy Central. The show was a sarcastic look at the presidential election. In 1993, he got his own show called “Politically Incorrect,” which was made possible by his success.
“Politically Incorrect” was a big hit right away, in part because Maher was able to keep the debates between a rotating panel of journalists, entertainers, and politicians lighthearted and funny. In 2003, HBO showed the first episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
In 2006, Maher had a talk show called “Amazon Fishbowl with Bill Maher” that was on the website amazon.com. He has written the best-selling books “When You Ride Alone, You Ride with Bin Laden,” “New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer,”
“The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everyone But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass,” all of which were published by the New York Times. Maher, who calls himself an “apatheist,” wrote and made the mocking documentary “Religulous” in 2008. In it, he talked to Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

Bill Maher's Wife and Kids
Maher has never married, which is different from many of his peers. In 2003, he started dating Coco Johnsen, who used to be a Playboy Cyber Girl. They were together for a total of 17 months. In her $9 million lawsuit against Maher after they broke up, Johnsen said that Maher caused her “pain and suffering” and broke his promise to marry her.
In May 2005, a judge threw out the case. Besides Karrine Steffans, a best-selling author, and former model, he has dated science teacher and journalist Cara Santa Maria and singer Anjulie Persaud.
Among the many groups he advises, Project Reason, which supports science and secular values, and NORML, which supports legalizing marijuana, are just two examples (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Since 1997, he has also been on the board of directors of PETA.
