Mary Jo Buttafuoco, the wife of Joey Buttafuoco, was shot in the head by a 17-year-old named Amy Fisher on May 19, 1992. News outlets around the country covered the incident, and each new development seemed more stunning than the last.
Media outlets began referring to Amy Fisher as “the Long Island Lolita,” and soon she was recognized by name by the general public. Mary Jo Buttafuoco managed to get through the attack, but it changed her forever.

Joey, then 36, began seeing her despite being married because he enjoyed the attention and affection he was receiving from her. However, as time progressed, Amy's jealousy of his wife only intensified.
Therefore, she had made up her mind to murder Mary Jo in a matter of months. In November of 1991, she attempted to employ two men to assist her, but by May 1992, she had taken matters into her own hands. She armed herself, went to the Buttafuocos' house, and told Mary Jo that Joey was having an affair with her imaginary younger sibling.
Amy shot Mary Jo once in the head as she thanked her for the information and turned to go back inside. Mary Jo's life was miraculously saved, and after she regained consciousness, Amy was identified, prosecuted, and eventually arrested for first-degree attempted murder.
Amy Fisher quickly gained notoriety after the media began extensively following her case, and she became known as the “Long Island Lolita.” Her legal team falsely claimed she was a naive high school senior who had been duped by an older man when the matter went to trial.
At her trial, it came out that Amy had been working for an escort agency and that a segment of a sex tape that had been covertly filmed and sold to a television show had been aired. Amy pled guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree aggravated assault in September of that year, despite the overwhelming weight of evidence against her.
She was found guilty and given a 15-year prison term on December 2, 1992; after serving five years, she will be eligible for parole. Finally, when the time came, Mary Jo agreed that Amy should be released. Amy Fisher was released from prison in 1999, at the age of 24.

Amy Fisher Spent Seven Years in Prison
Fisher pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated assault, down from the more serious allegation of first-degree attempted murder. After admitting guilt on one count of statutory rape, Joey Buttafuoco was also sentenced to four months in prison.
Joey and Mary Jo Buttafuoco, together with their daughter Jessie, relocated to California after Joey's release. Mary Jo Buttafuoco filed for divorce in 2003, but they remained married till then.
