The Magicians is a Syfy-produced American fantasy television series based on Lev Grossman's 2009 novel of the same name. In May 2015, a 13-episode order was made for the first season, which debuted as a special preview on December 16, 2015. The novels were initially optioned by Michael London in 2011, with the intention of developing the programme for the Fox Broadcasting Company. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, co-writers of X-Men: First Class, authored the pilot, but it was not picked up. The pilot was subsequently reworked by London, with McNamara and Gamble taking up writing responsibilities, and the screenplay was then sold to Syfy, which commissioned a pilot. Mike Cahill directed the pilot, which was shot in New Orleans in late 2014 and finished in December.
