Crop blights and dust storms threaten humanity's existence in the year 2067. Cooper, a widower engineer and former NASA pilot who has become a farmer, lives with his father-in-law Donald, his 15-year-old son Tom, and his 10-year-old daughter Murphy “Murph.” Strange dust patterns occur in Murphy's bedroom after a dust storm; she connects the oddity to a ghost.
Cooper finally deduces that the patterns are generated by gravity fluctuations and that they are binary representations of geographic locations. Cooper follows the coordinates to Professor John Brand's hidden NASA facility.
Unknown creatures created a wormhole around Saturn 48 years ago, offering a gateway to a distant galaxy with 12 possibly livable worlds near the black hole known as Gargantua. Dr. Mann, Laura Miller, and Wolf Edmunds were among the twelve volunteers that journeyed through the wormhole to study the planets individually, and three of them — Dr. Mann, Laura Miller, and Wolf Edmunds — returned good results.
