What Happened in Black Christmas?

Black Christmas is a slasher film directed by Sophia Takal and written by Takal and April Wolfe that was released in 2019.  It is the unofficial second remake of the 1974 Canadian film Black Christmas, following the 2006 film, and follows a group of sorority sisters at Hawthorne College as they are stalked by an unknown stalker. It is part of the Black Christmas franchise. Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O'Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, and Cary Elwes co-star in the film.

What the Black Christmas is All About?

The project started in June 2019, when Jason Blum stated that he will produce it through his Blumhouse Productions studio. Sophia Takal was confirmed as director and co-writer on the same day, and principal photography began soon after in New Zealand, lasting 27 days.

In June 2019, it was revealed that Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions, along with Adam Hendricks of Divide/Conquer and Ben Cosgrove, will create a remake of the 1974 classic Black Christmas.  In addition, the project's executive producers were Greg Gilreath and Zac Locke, both of Divide/Conquer.

In June, Sophia Takal was confirmed as the film's director, having previously worked with Blum on his Hulu series Into the Dark, while Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O'Grady, Lily Donoghue, and Caleb Eberhardt were cast as the film's stars. Cary Elwes was also added to the cast that month.

“I wanted to produce a movie where the audience felt seen rather than objectified or observed from a distance,” director Takal said in an interview, “I wanted to make a movie where the audience felt seen rather than objectified or viewed from a distance.”  Because Bob Clark died in 2007, it is the first Black Christmas picture in which he was not involved in the production process. Bob Clark produced and directed the 1974 film Black Christmas, as well as serving as an executive producer for the 2006 adaptation.
