General Hospital (abbreviated as GH) is a daytime television soap opera in the United States. It is the longest-running American soap opera in production, and the second-longest in American history behind Guiding Light, according to Guinness World Records. It is also the world's second-longest-running broadcast soap opera continuing in production, following British serials The Archers and Coronation Street.
On April 1, 1963, the ABC television network broadcasted the first episode of General Hospital. General Hospital is the longest-running serial in Hollywood history, as well as the longest-running entertainment programme on ABC. With 14 wins, it holds the record for the most Daytime Emmy Award wins for Outstanding Drama Series.

General Hospital Season 59
Most of the tales have centred around the Quartermaine and Spencer families since the late 1970s. General Hospital has more viewers than any other daytime soap opera from 1979 until 1988. It ascended to the top of the ratings in the early 1980s, thanks in part to the hugely popular “supercouple” Luke and Laura, whose wedding in 1981 drew 30 million viewers and is still the most-watched hour in American soap opera history.
The soap opera is also recognised for its high-profile celebrity guests, such Roseanne Barr, James Franco, and Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few. The show was named one of Time magazine's “100 Best TV Shows of All-Time” in 2007. General Hospital became the first ABC soap opera to broadcast in high-definition television on April 23, 2009, making it the first ABC soap opera to do so. On February 23, 2018, the serial's 14,000th episode aired.
Following the final broadcast of CBS' As the World Turns on September 17, 2010, General Hospital became the oldest American soap opera. All My Children and One Life to Live were both cancelled by ABC on April 14, 2011, leaving General Hospital as the network's final remaining soap opera following January 13, 2012. On April 1, 2013, the show marked its 50th anniversary.
Let's The Back Story of General Hospital Season 59
The earliest stories, which debuted in 1963, were mostly set at General Hospital in an undisclosed midsized Eastern city. Headwriters Eileen and Robert Mason Pollock would not disclose the city's name, Port Charles, until 1976. Steve Hardy (John Beradino) and his friend, Nurse Jessie Brewer, were at the centre of the plots (Emily McLaughlin).
Many early plots revolved around Jessie's rocky marriage to the much-younger Phil Brewer (initially portrayed by Roy Thinnes; later represented by Martin West). Audrey Hardy (Rachel Ames), a flight attendant and the sister of Nurse Lucille (Lucille Wall), arrived in town in 1964 and became Steve's love interest.
General Hospital was in trouble at the end of the 1970s, so executive producer Gloria Monty was brought in to save the show. The first supercouple, Luke and Laura, played by Anthony Geary and Genie Francis, is said to have been created by Monty. On November 17, 1981, the end of their hour-long wedding was the most-watched event in daytime serial history.
Several high-profile action, adventure, and science fiction storylines were included in the series during the 1980s. Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Niagara Falls, Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, Atlantic City, New Jersey, Big Bear and Avalon (Catalina Island), California, and San Francisco were among the locations used for filming.
Wrapping Up
From 1979 to 1988, General Hospital held the top spot in the ratings, competing against two game shows and two low-rated soaps on NBC—Texas and Santa Barbara—and Guiding Light on CBS (although Guiding Light had a renaissance in the middle of 1984, briefly dethroning General Hospital from the top spot). Despite the departure of prominent actors Anthony Geary and Genie Francis in the mid-1980s, General Hospital continued to thrive for the most part. Despite the fact that The Young and the Restless surpassed General Hospital as the highest-rated serial in 1989, the show continued to receive great ratings.
