Valerie Bertinelli was born Valerie Anne Bertinelli on April 23, 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware. She spent her childhood in Claymont, Delaware, Shreveport, Louisiana, Clarkston, Michigan, Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles, California, with her mother Nancy, father Andrew (an executive for General Motors), brothers Patrick, David, and Drew. Her mother was a teacher, and her father worked for General Motors.
