When Matthew McConaughey’s character, Rustin Cohle, said, “Time is a flat circle,” he wasn’t exaggerating the truth. According to a report from Deadline from the previous year, HBO was reportedly in talks with new writers to make True Detective season 4 a reality. This would be the premium content provider’s third attempt to re-capture the lightning they managed to bottle in 2014.
Now, not only do we have concrete evidence that True Detective: Night Country is in the process of being developed with Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid) and the Academy Award-winning Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) attached, but we also know that Jodie Foster, who also won an Academy Award, will serve as the show’s executive producer (Taxi Driver, The Accused, The Silence of the Lambs).
In February 2021, Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer of HBO, discussed the award-winning franchise by saying, “It’s safe to say we’re working with a few writers to find the proper tone and approach.”
“There’s no question that this is a field that has the potential to be incredibly exciting, and I believe that it might be much more interesting with a fresh perspective.” The following is everything that we currently know about True Detective season 4, including spoilers.
Has the Fourth Season of True Detective Been Confirmed?
Season 4 of True Detective has been confirmed, but it doesn’t mean it will air — in the sense that it might be canceled at any time if these new episodes don’t meet HBO’s standards between now and whenever (a la failed Game of Thrones prequel).
As Casey Bloys put it, “Quality is what will guide us.” He may have been referring to True Detective season 2 through an allusion (more on this later). It’s not going to happen if we wind up with scripts that we don’t think are representational or aren’t of a good enough quality.
When Sam Levinson, writer and director of the hit series Euphoria, and Zendaya and John David Washington’s Netflix film Malcolm & Marie were rumored to be in discussion with HBO about taking on Night Country, the “new voices” included Amazon’s erotic thriller Deep Water, which also featured Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck, as well as Argentinian talent Lucia Puenzo, who wrote the “buzz-worth” short film.
True Detective season 4 creator Nic Pizzolatto’s role in the series is still up in the air (if even at all). It was disclosed in 2020 that he had signed a deal with FX that would bring him back together with Matthew McConaughey – but not Woody Harrelson – for another dark crime thriller about missing people set in rural America called Redeemer. Pizzolatto’s contract with FX appears to have come apart, and he’s now free to work on Night Country, even though the FX pact has been terminated.
What Is the Plot of the Fourth Season of True Detective?
True Detective: Night Country will be set in the Arctic, where night can persist for more than 24 hours, according to Variety. The six men who run the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska, vanish into thin air when the long winter night falls.
Detectives Liz Danvers (portrayed by Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (TBA) will have to face their shadows and dig into the haunted facts that lie buried under the perpetual ice to solve the crime.”
We can rest easy knowing that the gritty tone that drew us in so many years ago will be there for us to enjoy once again.
When Will the Fourth and Final Season of True Detective Be Released?
There is no official release date for True Detective season 4 because the show is still in the early stages. HBO‘s production schedule remains a mystery, save that pre-production is now underway.
The second season of True Detective, starring Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, was widely criticized by critics, who blamed a rushed production timeline for its shortcomings.
Cary Fukunaga, the director of season one and the man responsible for No Time To Die, did not return to the director’s chair, leaving series creator Nic Pizzolatto to juggle writing and directing duties. It’s in everyone’s best interest to take things slowly and steadily now.
Who Will Be Appearing in True Detective Season 4?
True Detective season 4 has yet to have any cast members announced at the time of this article’s original publication. With the A-list casts of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams in seasons 1, 2, and 3, we were expecting a lot more star power in season 4.
Jodie Foster has agreed to star in this round of the anthology crime series, so you know you’re getting some serious star power. An executive producer credit for the legendary actress will be added as well.
Is There a Season 4 Trailer for True Detective?
As with the premiere date, there is no official trailer for True Detective season 4, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as HBO releases one. While you’re waiting, look at the season 3 trailer above.
