It's been a long time since True Detective was in Louisiana. The long-awaited fourth season of the hit HBO series, titled True Detective: Night Country, will take place in Alaska, with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis starring as detectives investigating a disappearance amid the dark of winter.
Season 4 marks a significant milestone for the criminal drama anthology. Season 1 of True Detective, which debuted in 2014, was widely regarded as the show's high point, while Season 2 was widely panned.
Mahershala Ali starred in the most recent season, which premiered in 2019. Nic Pizzolatto's contract with HBO terminated after that season, making True Detective's continuation up in the air.
A new True Detective, however, was confirmed by HBO in March 2022, with executive producer Barry Jenkins and writer-director Issa López at the helm. Now, with a new trailer, its release is closer than ever. This year will see the series' return. What we know about True Detective: Night Country so far is detailed below.
The first True Detective Season 4 Trailer has Dropped
The first trailer for this season's icy murder mystery has finally arrived after the network teased it as part of its 2023 lineup. The premise of the video is inspired, at least roughly, by the disappearance and subsequent discovery of the bodies of nine hikers at a camping site in Russia's Dyatlov Pass.
The episode begins in the cold, dark, and foreboding environment of Alaska, with Foster regaling detectives on video with the details of a brutal murder or murder. Foster and co-star Kali Reis form an unusual combination to investigate the crimes, and we then flash forward to sequences with severe enough blizzards to make you shudder in your seat.
True Detective tradition dictates that we learn next to nothing about the killer(s), their motive(s), or the nature of the crime(s). The complete trailer is shown below.
What is True Detective Season 4 About?
A far cry from the murky Louisiana of the first season, True Detective: Night Country transports us to the frozen city of Ennis, Alaska. In the first episode, eight guys who were working at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanished.
Synopsis: “Must confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice” describes the situation in which detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) find themselves. It's chilling to hear.
When is True Detective season 4 coming?
Even with the trailer, we still don't know when the program will premiere; all we know is that it will be out later this year. The network has a packed schedule this year, and it's not obvious where True Detective will fit in. More information is expected to be released in the coming months.
Who Will Appear in True Detective Season 4?
Foster is joined by Killing Eve's Fiona Shaw as the survivor Rose Aguineau and Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston as the regional chief of police. Also starring are John Hawkes as the gruff police officer Hank Prior and Doctor Who's Kali Reis.
Cast members Joel D. Montgrand, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe as Kayla Malee, and Finn Bennett as Peter Prior round out the ensemble.
