Apple MacBook Air M2

Thanks to a new design, a larger screen (13.6 inches instead of 13.3 inches), a faster M2 chip, and a long-awaited upgrade to a higher-resolution webcam, the 2022 version of the MacBook Air is still our top pick for the most versatile Apple laptop, with one exception.

At $1,199, which is $200 more than the usual starting price of $999, the MacBook Air is not a good deal. That's why the M1 version of the Air is still on our list of the best laptops. Still, we like everything else about it, and if you want an Air and don't mind spending more, we'd recommend it.

Acer Swift 3

This 14-inch laptop has either an AMD Ryzen or an Intel Core processor. It has a bigger screen than 13-inch laptops but still weighs less than 3 pounds, which is very light.

The bigger screen is also lovely, and it covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut, which is better than most screens that start at less than $700.

It also has a USB Type-C port, an HDMI port, and a keyboard that lights up. With 12th-generation Intel Core i-series CPUs, the Swift 3 version for 2022 costs just under $1,000. But you can still find a lot of 2021 models for less than $600.

Dell XPS 13

People like the Dell XPS 13 because of its size, weight, performance, and just how good it looks. In 2020, Dell made the laptop even smaller while making the screen bigger and improving performance for both CPU- and graphics-intensive tasks.

For 2022, Dell made the XPS 13 even smaller and lighter, kept the starting price at less than $999, and added the newest 12th-generation Intel processors.

We haven't had a chance to test the new model yet, but we expect it to be a good Windows alternative to the MacBook Air. Also, the 2021 XPS 13 with 11th-generation Intel chips is now less expensive if you want to save money.

HP Pavilion Aero 13

HP put a lot of value into the Aero 13. It has a magnesium-aluminum body that looks good, has good processing power, a long battery life, a bright, colorful screen, and weighs only 2 pounds (0.94 kilograms). Even with all it offers, it's hard to believe that the starting price is less than $700.

Lenovo Yoga 7i (14-inch)

This 3-pound, thin convertible laptop is a good choice for anyone who needs a computer for work or school. The all-metal body gives it a high-end look and feel, the keyboard is comfortable, and the touchpad is responsive and smooth.

Even though it doesn't have as many extra features as its more expensive cousin, the Yoga 9i, it does have one of Lenovo's sliding shutters for its webcam, so you can hide when you want to.

In our tests, the battery lasted for 12 hours and 45 minutes. Starting at $999, the newest version has 12th-generation Intel processors.

Acer Chromebook Spin 713

Is he tired of working on documents or spreadsheets on a small widescreen display? The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 has one of Acer's bright VertiView displays, a 13.5-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 2,256×1,504 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio.

As the name suggests, it gives you more room to work vertically, but it is still the same width as a typical 13.3-inch 16:9 laptop. Because of that, and its battery life lasted nearly 13 hours in our tests, this Chrome OS laptop will help you get more work done in a day.

It's also thin and light enough to carry around every day. This Chromebook's newest version is the first to get Intel's Evo verification, giving you the best mobile experience possible.

It's also the first to support Thunderbolt 4, which lets you connect to multiple external displays and gives you fast networking and data speeds.

Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360

The latest big-screen two-in-one from Samsung doesn't look too different from its predecessor, but it has a new, 12th-generation Intel processor inside that significantly boosts multi-core performance.

The other minor changes Samsung made to the Pro 360 also make it easier to use, making it one of the best two-in-ones you can buy now.

Apple MacBook Pro (2021, 16-inch)

New Apple chips, a new screen, a new design, and all the ports we've asked for: The new 16-inch MacBook Pro from Apple is the best made.

The more extensive MacBook Pro hardware and MacOS work together to get the most out of the parts and give the computer excellent battery life.

The new high-resolution mini-LED display is beautiful. And if you were looking for an HDMI port and an SD card reader, you'll find those here as well. But you have to pay for it: This high-end laptop with a 16-inch screen starts at $2,499.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus

There are a lot of laptops with a screen size of 15.6 inches, but 16-inch laptops like the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus aren't as standard. Even though the computer is slightly bigger than a 15.6-inch model, the 16-inch screen is great because it gives you more room to work and a bigger keyboard and touchpad.

For this Inspiron, Dell put in performance parts like Nvidia discrete graphics (though it's almost half the price if you go with Intel integrated graphics).

The display covers 100% sRGB and 81% AdobeRGB color gamuts, which is good enough if you start making web content. Also, the fit and finish of the laptop are better than what we're used to seeing from the Inspiron line.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8

Even though this Microsoft Surface laptop isn't the Surface Laptop, the Surface Pro is still a great choice if you want a Windows tablet that can also be used as a laptop.

Microsoft recently changed it for the Surface Pro 8, which has a bigger 13-inch screen, 11th-generation Intel Core processors, and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports.

For now, the Surface Pro 7 is still available at a discount, and an updated version called the Surface Pro 7 Plus will stay in the lineup, so you can still get the classic Pro design with new processors.
