Fans of Top Gun 2 (also known as Top Gun: Maverick) have been waiting for it for what seems like an eternity, thanks to what seems like an endless string of delays.
At one point, the sequel was expected to hit theatres in July 2019, however it currently appears that it will be released in May 2022, rather than July 2019. Don’t worry, we made sure to cross every digit and touch every piece of wood in our vicinity before typing that.
In order to hype up the film’s release, Paramount released a new teaser for it on March 29, 2022, which we hope doesn’t imply that another delay is in the works.
Don’t be concerned, since in September 2020, actor Jon Hamm promised that the wait will be worth it and that the film would be “all you hope it will be.” Top Gun fans, on the other hand, will be the ones to decide.
Top Gun 2 Cast: Who will Appear in the Sequel to Top Gun?
Tom Cruise will return to the role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the film.
In 2018, he posted a picture from the set with the legendary slogan “Feel the need” and the message “#Day 1” to his Twitter account. “Aviators are back, and there’s a desire for speed,” he said in an interview with Access Hollywood. We’re going to have a lot of big, powerful computers. As with the first film, it will be a competition film…but it will mark a step forward for Maverick.”
The cast has also expanded with the addition of Miles Teller, who will play Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Goose Bradshaw from the first film.
A return appearance by Val Kilmer, who reprised his role as Iceman in the previous film and is now a four-star admiral who is currently serving as the Chief of Naval Operations.
Jennifer Connelly will also participate in the film as Maverick’s assistant and love interest Amy, and Jon Hamm and Ed Harris will make cameo cameos in the film for the first time.
It has not yet been confirmed whether or not any additional original cast members will be returning. Kelly McGillis has stated that she would be interested in a cameo role as Charlie Blackwood at the very least. As she stated back in 2014, “[Top Gun] was far more successful than I could have dreamed it would be… because I took so much time off, I am able to return to acting — without attempting to be anything other than who I really am.”
What is the Storyline of Top Gun 2 Like?
Top Gun 2 will take place in the present day, with the pilots having to contend with drone warfare and fighter jets.
The sequel will be the polar opposite of the first, with Maverick returning in the role of an instructor.
In addition, the film will feature the adult son of Goose (Riot FKA Wrigley), who is expected to have a confrontation with Maverick.
When Does Top Gun 2 Come out in Theatres? When will Top Gun Maverick be Released in Theatres?
Let’s get right to the point before we get bogged down in all the delays. According to current plans, Top Gun: Maverick will be released in UK cinemas on May 25, 2022, and in US theatres on May 27, 2022.
According to The Wall Street Journal, both Netflix and Apple approached Paramount to see whether the studio would be interested in selling the film to them for a streaming release. Although Paramount has decided to release the film in theatres, this is a wonderful development.
If the initial Top Gun release date of July 12, 2019 is maintained, the sequel will hit theatres a little more than three years after the first film’s release. Following that, the date was postponed for a complete year before being shifted slightly ahead to June 24, 2020 in the United States and July 17, 2020 in the United Kingdom.
Although the sequel was initially postponed to December 23, 2020, Paramount later pushed the release date back to July 2, 2021, only to have it delayed again to November 19, 2021. This wasn’t the end of the delays, as Paramount subsequently pushed the release date back again to November 19, 2021.
We were unfortunately not able to avoid a further delay, but we are now (hopefully) at the end of the road.
The sequel was filmed from May 2018 to June 2019, with production wrapping up in June 2019. Basically, it was a lifetime ago, so good luck to the actors and crew in terms of remembering what happened when it comes to the promotional tour.
Top Gun 2 Trailer: Check out the Top Gun Maverick Trailer Right Here!
The first teaser was unveiled on July 18, 2019, at Comic-Con International in San Diego, which now appears to be in a whole new planet.
As soon as the trailer was released, people were eager to point out parallels between it and the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, pointing out certain moments that appeared to be practically identical to the video for Star Wars: Episode VII.
The second trailer for Top Gun was released on December 16, 2019, serving as an early holiday surprise for fans of the film. Another option is to check out a fan-made LEGO replica of the trailer, which is every bit of incredible as it sounds.

At CinemaCon in August 2021, the first 13 minutes of the film, as well as a new trailer, were shown to spectators for the first time. According to Deadline, Maverick defies the Admiral and flies to Mach 10 in the opening sequence.
He reaches Mach 10, but the plane crashes shortly after. Fortunately, Maverick makes it out alive; else, the film would have been much shorter.
