An American country music performer and composer as well as an actor and record producer, Tobias Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961.
Prior to departing Mercury Records in 1998, Keith recorded his first four studio albums under the stage names Toby Keith, Boomtown, Blue Moon, and Dream Walkin', as well as a Greatest Hits collection, under the different imprints of Mercury.
Several of his tracks made the Top Ten, including “Should've Been a Cowboy,” which peaked at No. 1 on the country charts and became the most-played country song of the 1990s.

After signing to DreamWorks Nashville in 1998, Keith came out with “How Do You Like Me Now?” in late 1999, which became his breakout hit.

Early Life
Clinton, Oklahoma, is home to Toby Keith Covel, who was born on July 8th, 1961. He is one of Carolyn and Hubert Covel's three children.
Even as a child, he would spend the summers with his grandma. She ran a restaurant in Fort Smith, Arkansas, called the Supper Club.
Toby was mesmerized by the performances of the musicians in the supper club. It all began when he bought his first guitar, worked at his grandmother's club, and ended up on stage with the house band when he was just 8 years old.
He and his siblings were raised in the Oklahoma and Arkansas towns of Moore and Fort Smith. On the Moore High School football team, he was a defensive end.
Following his high school graduation, he found employment as a derrick in the oil fields. He worked his way through the ranks to become an operations manager during the course of his career.
The Easy Mony Band was created when Toby was twenty-one with a slew of pals. Toby continued to work in the oil fields while the band played at local taverns.
In 1982, when the oil business was going through a hard patch, he was laid off.
Toby subsequently went on to play defensive end with the Oklahoma City Drillers, a semi-pro football team.

In the early 1990s, Toby traveled to Nashville and performed on the city's famed Music Row. Many of the city's record labels received copies of his demo tape. He returned to Oklahoma since his demo was not well received.
He had made a vow to himself that he would either get a recording deal by the time he was 30 or give up on his dreams of being a professional musician and find another path.
That's when the Easy Money Band's admirer, who was a flight attendant, delivered his demo tape to a Mercury Records executive who was on the plane with her. Toby's tone appealed to the executive, and he signed him to a recording deal.
On the country music charts in 1993, Toby's debut single, “Should've Been a Cowboy,” topped the charts.
The song was also a hit on the mainstream music charts, peaking at number 100. More than three million times had been played on the radio by the end of the 1990s when “Should've Been a Cowboy” was released.
Even Billy Ray Cyrus' “Achy Breaky Heart” couldn't match the popularity of this song in the 1990s.
