The Super Hero Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a 2021 American superhero film starring Shang-Chi, based on Marvel Comics. It is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures (MCU).

The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi with Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, Fala Chen, Benedict Wong, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung, and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Shang-Chi and his sister Xialing (Zhang) are drawn into a hunt for a fabled town by their father, Wenwu (Leung), the commander of the Ten Rings organisation.

What is the Plot of the Movie?

Xu Wenwu discovers the mysterious ten rings that offer its wearer immortality and heavenly abilities thousands of years ago. He founds the Ten Rings organisation, which goes on to conquer countries and overthrow governments across history. In 1996, Wenwu sought to Ta Lo, a village reputed to be home to legendary animals, in order to increase his strength.

He makes his way to the town entrance through a mystical forest but is halted by village protector Ying Li. They fall in love, but the villagers reject Wenwu, so Li follows him out the door. Wenwu abandons the Ten Rings, and Shang-Chi and Xialing are their two offspring. Wenwu's adversaries, the Iron Gang, assassinate Li when Shang-Chi is seven years old.

Wenwu resurrects the rings in order to murder the Iron Gang, reclaims leadership of his organisation, and puts Shang-Chi through extensive martial arts training. Wenwu forbids Xialing from studying martial arts, so she practises in secret. When Shang-Chi is 14 years old, Wenwu assigns him the mission of assassinating the Iron Gang's boss. Shang-Chi feels disheartened after completing his assignment, so he flees to San Francisco and takes the name “Shaun.”

Shang-Chi currently works as a valet alongside his best friend Katy, who is unaware of his background. The Ten Rings assault them on a bus and take a necklace that Li handed to Shang-Chi. Wenwu anonymously supplies Shang-Chi with Xialing's whereabouts, and Shang-Chi decides to see her, fearful that the Ten Rings would go after Xialing's matching pendant from Li. He tells Katy about his history, and she insists on assisting him.

They track down Xialing in Macau, where she started an underground boxing club after fleeing Wenwu. The Ten Rings raid the fight club, and Shang-Chi, Katy, Xiang, and her pendant are captured by Wenwu.

Interesting Things To Know

Marvel Studios began casting individuals in their twenties for the part of Shang-Chi in mid-July 2019, including Lewis Tan and Simu Liu; Tan previously appeared in Iron Fist as Zhou Cheng. The studio insisted on people of Chinese ancestry auditioning for the role. Liu was considered early in the audition process and was called back in for a second audition when the casting directors were having trouble casting the character.

On July 14, he retested for the role, and on July 16, he was officially cast. Awkwafina, who was the first actor cast for the film, conducted chemistry tests with the other actors and stated that “it was obvious from the start that [Liu] was Shang-Chi.”

Cretton and producer Kevin Feige confirmed Liu and Awkwafina's castings at Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con presentation on July 20, when the film's full title, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was revealed. The Mandarin, played by Tony Leung, would be introduced in this film, according to Feige, who emphasised the Ten Rings organization's importance across the MCU.
