The Sandbox Metaverse Game: What’s So Special About it?

The Sandbox is a virtual environment on the Ethereum blockchain where gamers can create, own, and monetize their gaming experiences.

The Sandbox is best known for its two major mobile hits, The Sandbox (2011) and The Sandbox Evolution (2016), which garnered 40 million downloads across iOS and Android.

Pixowl, a developer/publisher from mobile, decided to bring this successful User Generated Content gaming IP and vast community of artists to the blockchain ecosystem in 2018.

The idea is to disrupt incumbent game makers such as Minecraft and Roblox by giving creators actual ownership of their inventions in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and rewarding them for participating in the ecosystem.

A User-Generated Content Ecosystem

The Sandbox blockchain gaming platform comprises three related products that work together to give a holistic experience for producing user-generated content (UGC). Users will gain even more from the merged goods because they can ensure copyright ownership for their user-created material using blockchain and smart contracts.

What's So Special About It?

We haven't seen the whole experience yet, but the potential to own a secret place in a shared game world is part of what has some people excited about The Sandbox. You'll be able to travel around and visit other user-created locations, hang out, and socialize—plus, because it's user-owned, the game environment will be continuously shifting and changing.

How to Buy The Sandbox NFTs

While the game has not yet been released, The Sandbox has been selling NFTs in anticipation of the future full release for several years. The project holds LAND sales occasionally, allowing prospective players and investors to acquire on the primary market, or you can seek secondary marketplaces to buy LAND and other assets.

As of this writing, the leading NFT marketplace OpenSea has over 100,000 parcels of LAND. You can also buy other NFT assets for the game, such as avatars and objects. For example, Snoop Dogg has sold a series of 3D NFT avatars based on his likeness, which is also available on OpenSea and other marketplaces.

The Future

The Sandbox has yet to release a definite date for when the complete experience will be available, although it is expected to be later in 2022 at the earliest. In late 2021, the game began having restricted “alpha” playtest dates in preparation for a major launch.

As of this writing, The Sandbox has hosted two of that alpha playtest periods, each lasting a few weeks and allowing the public access to a modest selection of selected experiences. For example, at the previous session, there were over 35 different worlds to explore, including Snoop Dogg and the SCMP experiences and an NFT museum anchored by World of Women imagery.

While exploring and experiencing the game was free, only those who acquired an Alpha Pass NFT were eligible for play-to-earn token incentives for completing tasks. Put another way, you must spend money to earn money (tokens), but the game is free to play.

While exploring the alpha worlds, we discovered that the most engaging experiences seemed rooted in NFT and Web3 cultures, such as the museum mentioned above and a dance club decked out in NFT artwork from various collections.

Marketplace

The Sandbox's NFT marketplace allows users to upload, publish, and sell their VoxEdit-created NFTs. To verify ownership, creations are initially uploaded to an IPFS network for decentralized storage before being recorded on the blockchain.

Once this is completed, the creations become ASSETS that may be sold by putting an initial sale offer on the marketplace and allowing potential purchasers to purchase them.

Game Maker

Anyone may use the Sandbox Game Maker to create fantastic 3D games for free. Visual scripting tools make it possible to create spectacular 3D games in minutes without requiring coding. Creators like you contribute to a large metaverse full of incredible interactive creations and experiences.
