The Princess Diaries 3 Expected Release Date: Cast | Plot | Production | and All You Need to Know!

Get your crowns shining and your plane tickets to Genovia ready, for there will be a third installment of “The Princess Diaries.” The threequel is in development at Disney, and Aadrita Mukerji (of Reacher and Supergirl fame) is set to pen the script, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on November 15.

The Princess Diaries, a film adaptation of a novel series by Meg Cabot, was released to the public in 2001. Released in 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is the sequel to the hit film The Princess Diaries.

In the classic films starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, the reclusive San Francisco girl Mia Thermopolis learns that she is the princess and heir apparent to a small European principality called Genovia. In preparation for Mia's eventual ascension to the queen, her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Rinaldi, visits the firehouse-turned-art-studio-turned-apartment where she and her mother live.

Mia is proclaimed “Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia” (yeah, chills!) at the end of The Princess Diaries 2, replacing Clarisse as monarch. By keeping her heart open to love and a connection with Lord Nicholas Devereaux, she is able to overturn an old royal marriage law (that she must marry to rule Genovia) (Chris Pine).

Speculation About the Princess Diaries 3 Release Date

The movie won't hit theatres for a long, as the script is still being written.

If production begins in '23, we might expect to see Princess Diaries 3 in theatres in '24, most likely in the second half of that year.

The Princess Diaries 3 Cast: Will Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews Be Back?

The cast has not been announced just yet because production on the film is only getting started. That leaves us in the dark as to whether or not the original cast will return. However, we can rest assured that Julie Andrews will not be returning to her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi because she has already stated as much.

As part of celebrating her AFI Life Achievement Award, she gave an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in which she said: “It seems like it's too late now to try it. In my case, in particular, that point is too far in the past to return to it. It's a nice idea, but I doubt it could ever come to fruition.”

Anne Hathaway, on an episode of Watch What Happens Live in 2019, revealed that a draught for a third film in the franchise existed, and she has previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise. However, she recently stated that she was “pushing for it” and that she “would more than entertain it” on Entertainment Tonight.

“I believe we could pull it off if we could only get Julie Andrews onboard. A green screen would be set up wherever she was, and we'd make it happen “in her explanation she said.

In August on The Drew Barrymore Show, Mandy Moore, who played the school bully Lana Thomas, claimed that she “would be game” to return.

Production Updates for The Princess Diaries 3

Meg Cabot, who wrote the source novel, remained optimistic even after a second film adaptation of her work failed to materialize in the late aughts. She said in 2017 that there were scripts out there and people were prepared to make it “to honor Marshall.”

Anne Hathaway revealed in 2019 that there was a script for a new movie, and she was in if everything came together perfectly when Disney+ premiered and a flurry of reboots, reimaginings, and new sequels seemed to be springing up virtually every day.

Although, it did take a few years for everything to fall into place. The Hollywood Reporter states that writer Aadrita Mukerji (Supergirl) is on board to continue the Anne Hathaway-led film series rather than remake it for The Princess Diaries 3.

The story of Princess Diaries is about a young girl coming of age in the United States without realizing that she is the rightful heir to the throne of a little European country named Genovia.

Mia Thermopolis, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, is in a bind when she discovers her royal genealogy and is compelled by her grandmother, the Queen, to determine whether to accept or reject her position as heir to the throne of Genovia.

While that is the seed concept from which the entire franchise grew, the story has progressed considerably since then. As the second book in the series, Royal Wedding Antics focuses on the shenanigans surrounding the upcoming royal marriage in the state of Genovia, which is ruled by Mia.

There has been no official word on what the third installment of the Princess Diaries will be about, but it's safe to presume that it will continue the story of Mia's reign as queen following the events of the previous films.

How Much Profit Do Movies Generate?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first film in the Princess Diaries franchise earned $163.5 million worldwide, but the sequel only made $134.7 million.

While it's still too early to tell how much money the third film will make, my guess is that thanks to all the Julie Andrews/Anne Hathaway fans out there, it will be at least as successful as the previous two.
