The Nun 2 saw Valak take in Saint Lucy's eyes, which are a holy treasure. The bad guy got stronger thanks to the holy treasure. It turned into an unstoppable force that could call goat demons and blast energy and fire all around it.
But even with the upgrade, Sister Irene was still able to drive out the devil, and Maurice was said to be free of its control.
In the 1960s, when the Warren family meets Maurice, Valak takes over him again. This is clear if you've seen all of The Conjuring movies in order.
