Owen, Beth's husband, committed suicide recently. He took a boat out from their lake cottage and shot himself in the head with a pistol Beth had no idea he had. She spends her nights drinking and rummaging through Owen's stuff, devastated by his death. She insists on keeping her normal teaching job and attempts to appear calm and in control, much to the dismay of her friend Claire and her next-door neighbour Mel.
Owen left an alarming suicide note in which he said, “Nothing exists. Nothing is pursuing you. Now you're secure, “Beth is still perplexed. She begins to experience weird, otherworldly happenings at night, which she rejects at first as dreams, but which gradually become real. Beth discovers floor blueprints for a reversal of their lake house while searching through Owen's stuff.
Loud music begins to play downstairs one night, and Beth receives a phantom text and call from Owen's phone. She sees a photo of a lady who looks quite similar to her on his phone after locating and charging it. Claire asks her to quit delving into Owen's history because she believes he's having an affair.
An intoxicated Beth admits that she died for four minutes in a car accident years ago and saw nothing when she died after a night out with Claire and their coworkers. Owen constantly disagreed with her and was on the verge of persuading her to change her viewpoint before he died.
Beth also says she's depressed and that Owen started sleepwalking a year ago, and she's worried that she's passing on her negative emotions to him. Beth is startled by a mysterious presence that night, and she sees numerous terrified ladies running through the woods. She discovers blood on the boat where Owen shot himself while investigating and senses an unseen presence.
