What The Matrix Resurrections will be about?

Village Roadshow Pictures and Venus Castina Productions will collaborate on the project. The Matrix Resurrections will have its global debut on December 18, 2021, in San Francisco, and will be released theatrically on December 22, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures; it will also stream digitally for a month on HBO Max's ad-free tier in the United States on the same date.

Neo leads an apparently regular existence as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco following the events of The Matrix Revolutions, where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. He and Trinity have no idea who the other is. Morpheus, on the other hand, gives him the red pill and reintroduces him to the Matrix universe.

Trailer of The Matrix 4

A bearded Reeves seeks advice from a bespectacled psychiatrist, portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother fame, in the trailer. Neo's background as the Messianic figurehead of a resistance organisation at battle with the AI underlying the Matrix is alluded to in Reeves' character's nightmares.

Reeves, who Harris refers to as Thomas, appears to be unaware of the reality Neo discovered in the previous film: that the world he knows is a computer-generated simulation. But when he rides on an elevator, observes his image in a mirror, and relaxes in a bathtub with a fake yellow duck perched on his head, he realises something is wrong.

Given that Neo seemed to die at the end of The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, it's possible that Reeves is portraying a new or alternate version of his original character. The same might be said for Moss' resistance fighter Trinity, who doesn't seem to recognise Reeves when they meet in a coffee shop and shake hands.

Alternatively, Thomas/Neo might be attempting to wipe off memories of the guy he used to be by ingesting large quantities of the infamous blue pills. Neo was offered a pill of that colour in the first film, which would allow him to return home and continue his virtual existence.

Neo, of course, selected the red pill, which allowed him to “remain in Wonderland and [see] how deep the rabbit hole goes,” as Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus put it. The Matrix universe's recurring motif is Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, which reappears in book form in the new three-minute teaser.

Another character, played by British-Chinese actress Jessica Henwick, has a rabbit tattoo that refers to Lewis Carroll's White Rabbit. Meanwhile, the backdrop music is White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, a psychedelic 1967 hymn influenced by Carroll's poetry and visuals.

The Making of Matrix 4

The Wachowskis assured their close colleagues throughout the production of the Matrix films that they had no plans to make another film in the series after The Matrix Revolutions (2003). Instead, they endorsed the idea of players “inherit the plot,” and The Matrix Online was marketed as the official sequel to The Matrix. Rumors about a new chapter began to spread online in 2012, when it was revealed that the Wachowskis were developing two more films in the franchise and that Keanu Reeves was in talks to reprise his role as Neo. Another report from 2014 stated that the brothers had submitted a narrative idea to Warner Bros. for a new Matrix trilogy.

These were eventually shown to be untrue. In interviews promoting Jupiter Ascending (2015) in February 2015, Lilly Wachowski called a return to The Matrix a “particularly repelling idea in these times” when studios preferred to green-light sequels, reboots, and adaptations over original material, while Lana Wachowski said they had not heard anything but thought the studio might be looking.
