The Lost Daughter

The story

A story that digs deep into the unnerving truth that we hide from ourselves, the truth about the past and the messed up emotions it accompanies with it. Leda, a divorced woman with two daughters and a professor of English literature. The movie begins with Leda planning a vacation to discover herself in the newfound solidarity by being apart from her children as her grown daughters are now living with her ex-husband in Canada. The event that was supposed to make her lonely liberated her to serenity. Little did she know that this visit to the coastal town in Italy and the events which followed will reveal some gruesome and horrifying secrets of her past as she finds herself in close proximity to Napolitains inhabitants, Sharing the same beach with their family

Leda one day discovers herself finding the missing Nina's daughter (Napolitain family). She reminisces about all the bruises she endured in her childhood and still carries them to her present. The discontent she had from her mother (with the threats to leave), and as a mother herself as she found herself sacrificing her dreams for the sake of her family. She recalls her abandoning of her daughter.

This story elucidates how emotional traumas are ferried inside us through the generations. There is a beautiful line that summarises all that the story is about –

‘Though we can't undo the damage, forgiveness is a loop. It never retrieves what has happened to us or what we have done. The sole action undertaken is the acceptance of the damage that we have rented.'
