The Last of Us is a masterpiece of video game design. An emotional journey across a zombie-infested America is at the heart of The Last of Us. It's as if The Road and Children of Men had a baby.
Great narrative, acting, and engaging characters earned the game more accolades than any of the zombie content. It's common knowledge that video game dialogue is often poorly written. When it comes to engaging content and compelling narratives, video games don't normally rank very high.
The Last of Us and other games with compelling narratives and memorable protagonists are altering this perception. The Last of Us's good and bad guys are broken down here for your convenience.
Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller
In The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal is one of the two main protagonists, playing the role of Joel Miller. After the death of his adolescent daughter at the beginning of the epidemic, Joel, a survivor in the post-apocalyptic world, goes through a severe emotional struggle. The story begins in Boston, where he is assigned by Marlene, commander of the Fireflies resistance group, to transport Ellie throughout the United States.
Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams
Ellie Williams, played by Bella Ramsey, is a teen orphan who is bitten by a zombie virus carrier but is able to survive. Thus, she is to travel with Joel to a research facility, where she will be studied and treated, if possible.
Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller
Bill, played by Nick Offerman, is a survivalist (yes, a “doomsday prepper”) who guards his fortified compound with lethal traps and an arsenal of firearms. Bill lends a hand to Joel and Ellie by providing them with a car battery in the game. Yet, Bill's experience is presented in a very different light in the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us.
Merle Dandridge as Marlene
Actress Merle Dandridge plays Marlene, the head of the Boston-based resistance group Fireflies. The Fireflies are a democratic group that is fighting to eliminate FEDRA, a fascist organization that they believe is harming the survivors in the quarantine zones.
Marlene devises a plan to transport Ellie to a facility where she may be thoroughly investigated and the data utilized to develop a cure after learning that Ellie is immune to the virus that transforms humans into zombie-like monsters.
Murray Bartlett as Frank
Murray Bartlett plays Frank, Bill's companion, whose character and connection with Bill are examined in considerably greater depth on HBO than in the video game (if you can even call it that).
