The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6: Eveything You Need to Know About the Final Season!

Unfortunately, The Handmaid's Tale, like all stories, has an ending.

It was confirmed before the release of season five earlier this year that June and company would be back for a sixth and final season, which would hopefully bring closure to her journey in a way that fans will like.

“It has been a great honor to convey the narrative of Margaret Atwood's landmark work and the chillingly relevant world,” said creator, showrunner, and executive producer Bruce Miller in a statement at the time of the announcement of the show's sixth and final season.

“We are in awe of our great fans for their unfailing support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point,” the creators said in a statement after the series finale.

What sort of foundation will this last season provide for the spinoff The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood's new sequel to the main material? Will There Be a Season 6 of “The Handmaid's Tale?”

Blessed be Hulu — The Handmaid's Tale will surely be back for a sixth season, the streamer has revealed. Hulu renewed the dystopian drama for a sixth season back in September, but viewers may be unhappy to find that this will be the show's last installment.

Showrunner Bruce Miller stated in a press statement that he was “thrilled to deliver audiences a sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale” because “it has been a great honor to portray the narrative of Margaret Atwood's original novel and the chillingly relevant universe.”

“We are in awe of our great fans for their unfailing support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point,” the creators said in a statement after the series finale.

Miller has stated that he is “actively creating” a sequel series to The Handmaid's Tale based on Margaret Atwood's novel The Testaments, which will take place years after the events of the original.

Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Release Date: When Will It Air?

Due to the pandemic, there was a two-year pause between seasons three and four of The Handmaid's Tale, which is longer than the usual one year between installments. The show's sixth season may not premiere until late 2023, a full year after the conclusion of season five, but the production appears to be back on track.

But the pressure to make this final season great, plus the sequel plans for The Testaments, could delay the premiere until early 2024.

Who Will Be in Season 6 of “The Handmaid's Tale?”

The Handmaid's Tale revolves around Elisabeth Moss's June, and the performance is superb. She's an EP herself, and the finale will likely revolve around her arc. Fans also anticipate the return of Yvonne Strahovski as her major antagonist Serena Joy. It's now unclear whether or not Sam Jaeger, who plays Mark Tuello, O-T Fagbenle, who plays Luke, or Samira Wiley, who plays Moira, will return.

Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, Max Minghella as Nick Blaine, and Casey Cox as Nick's wife, Rose, are among the Gileadites who are set to return for the series' final season.

The stories of Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia and Jordana Blake as Hannah Bankole/Agnes Mackenzie, June and Luke's daughter, are central to The Testaments, so viewers hope they will return. Madeline Brewer, who plays Janine, is expected to return, as are Mckenna Grace and Esther Keyes, Ever Carradine and Naomi Putnam, and Jason Butler Harner and Amy Landecker, who play Commander and Mrs. Mackenzie, respectively.

The Handmaid's Tale Plot

In spite of the lack of an announced storyline for Season 6, Bruce Miller, the showrunner for The Handmaid's Tale, is hard at work on a new installment called The Testaments.

Although Hulu hasn't officially confirmed the series' renewal, it appears likely that The Handmaid's Tale will seek to set up a spinoff by shifting the focus to Lydia and Hannah and ending June's story in order to introduce viewers to the next installment.

Is the Handmaid's Tale Actually Coming to an End With Season 6?

Hulu hasn't left Gilead just yet, despite the conclusion of The Handmaid's Tale. Hulu has announced in a press release that Miller is working on a sequel series titled The Testaments, which will be adapted from Atwood's 2019 novel of the same name.

There are three protagonists in this sequel, and one of them is Aunt Lydia. The story begins 15 years after the events of the first novel (who is played by Ann Dowd in the series).

Although The Handmaid's Tale has not been formally picked up for a second season, there is a good chance that the universe will carry on once June's story concludes.
