The release date of Blumhouse's forthcoming Ethan Hawke-starring horror flick has been pushed back to the summer of 2022.

Movie theatres will now show “The Black Phone,” originally slated to open on February 4, on June 24. A 13-year-old boy called Finney Shaw is abducted and carried to a soundproof basement where no one can hear his screams by a murderer in “The Black Phone,” a film by Scott Derrickson. For whatever reason, Finney begins to hear voices of the killer's prior victims when an unplugged wall phone starts to ring,” according to the film's logline. A press release describes Hawke's performance as “the most horrifying role of his career,” while Mason Thames makes his feature film debut as Finney. Hawke plays the aforementioned killer in the film. It was written and directed by Derrickson, who previously worked on “Sinister” and Marvel's “Doctor Strange.” Additionally, “The Black Phone” is produced by Jason Blum and C. Robert Cargill as well as executive-produced by Joe Hill, Christopher H. Warner, and Ryan Turek.

Pre-taped footage of Hawke saying that he disregarded his “no evil guys” rule for the picture was shown at CinemaCon in August, while Blum claimed that it was the scariest film he had ever worked on.

“The teaser promises utter terror as the Thames is tortured by Hawke, fond of donning horrific masks and teasing him with memories of former basement dwellers and his own youth,” Donnelly noted of the clip.

Through phone conversations, ghosts of children who have died trying to help Thames escape by leaving clues and life hacks in his physical location. This introduces the supernatural into the story.
