Thalaivii (Female Leader) is a biographical drama film based on the life of Indian actress and politician J. Jayalalithaa, released in 2021. Kangana Ranaut plays Jayalalithaa and Arvind Swami plays M. G. Ramachandran in the film.
The film was formally released on Jayalalithaa's birthday, February 24, 2019. The film was originally titled Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi and Telugu, but the creators subsequently decided to distribute it in all three languages under the title Thalaivi. Principal photography began on November 10th, 2019 and will conclude in December 2020. The film's release was postponed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and Maharashtra's shutdown. It was then postponed for September 10, 2021, under the new title Thalaivii.
Plot of the Thalaivii Movie
The film begins with Jaya (Ranaut) attending the state's political session, where the incumbent Chief Minister (Nasser) is presenting the state's budget. Apart from her phone lines being tapped, Jaya stops him and demands an explanation of the corruption accusations brought against her. She insists that he quit. She defends MGR (Swami), claiming that he sacrificed his life for the benefit of the ordinary man.
The opposition, on the other hand, challenges her ties with MGR, ending in a fight during the session. There is an attempt to offend Jaya's modesty. Jaya claims she was treated like the Mahabharata character “Draupadi” and that she would return to the session after becoming the Chief.
On February 12, 1965, Jaya is debuted as a young actress filming songs at AVM Studios in Madras. During production, it is revealed that MGR is adored by the film business and politics, and that his co-stars are encouraged to keep their careers to a minimum. Saroja's (Cassandra) film career is damaged in one such event when she seeks to develop a connection with MGR.
MGR's Kanappan (Virral Patel) makes the decision to put an end to Saroja's career by destroying the script that was prepared for her. On set, Jaya (also known as Amu) is joined by her mother Sandhya (Bhagyashree). Jaya takes Saroja's position, and when MGR pays a visit to Vijaya-Vauhini Studios, Jaya treats him with contempt by failing to acknowledge him.
Finally, the next day, she acts as though she recognises everyone at the studio, including the stray dog on set. At a rehearsal, she is moved by MGR's ability to respect a crew member who has been injured on set and to give quick assistance. The film depicts the blossoming affection between MGR and Jaya via unique songs composed for MGR's films as well as for Thalaivii.
Kanappan continues to act in the same manner with Jaya, but she is wise enough to not let him succeed. Because MGR is married to Janaki, Jaya is devastated to learn that she is the other lady (Madhoo). When MGR was shot in the neck and taken to the hospital, this happened. The alliance of parties triumphs as MGR recovers.
Kanappan recruits a new heroine for MGR's upcoming film and provides Jaya a complete and final payment to end her long-running main role with MGR. Jaya tries to talk to MGR about it, but he tosses it off, claiming it's only about one film. Meanwhile, Jaya has been cast in new projects alongside Sobhan (Jisshu Sengupta), and the results have been positive. MGR's films, on the other hand, were a flop.
The film, which had a budget of 100 crores, made 4.75 crore in its first week at the box office.
