Sydney Michelle McLaughlin, an American hurdler, and sprinter, born on August 7, 1999, currently holds the 400-meter hurdles world record. She won the gold medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and has the Olympic and world record times of 50.68 and 51.46, respectively.
When McLaughlin achieved a world record of 51.90 seconds at the 2020 USA Olympic trials, she became the first woman to breach 52 seconds in the 400 m hurdles.
She took silver in the 2019 World Championships. She also won gold as part of a women's 4400 meters relay team at the 2019 World Championships and the Tokyo Games. In 2022, she won the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, setting a new world record time of 50.68 seconds.
She won the World Youth Championships as a 15-year-old in 2015. McLaughlin was the youngest athlete to qualify for the U.S. Olympic track squad since 1980 in 2016, finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a world under-18 best time of 54.15 seconds.

At the 2015 national youth trials, McLaughlin lowered her 400-meter hurdles best to 55.28; the time was a world record for a 15-year-old and stood second on the all-time world youth list after Leslie Maxie's world youth best (and U.S. high school record) of 55.20 achieved in 1984.
She earned a spot at the Cali, Colombia, IAAF World Youth Championships in 2015, where she won gold in 55.94 and concluded the year as the world's top junior and youth competitor in the competition.
