An official prequel is in the works for Stranger Things, Netflix's most popular original series. Yet, there is a catch: it is not a TV show. An upcoming stage adaptation of “Stranger Things,” titled “The First Shadow,” will open on London's West End.
The play was written by Kate Trefry, who has also contributed to the main program, and the Duffer Brothers served as executive producers. The Phoenix Theatre will host the live performance, and tickets will go on sale later this month.
The play's setting and potential connections to the series' fifth and final season have so far only been hinted at in a brief summary.
The synopsis reads: “Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper's car won't start, Bob Newby's sister won't take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town.
“The Creel family learns the hard way that starting again isn't so simple when new student Henry Creel arrives. Also, the past's gloomy specters might cast a lengthy shadow.
This new adventure, “brought to life by a multi-award winning creative team,” will “transport you straight back to the beginning of the Stranger Things saga – and may hold the key to the finish.”
In a press release, the Duffer Brothers discussed the play themselves.
“We can't wait to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Kate Trefry's play is shocking, unsettling, and heartbreaking in equal measure; working with the wonderful [director] Stephen Daldry has been nothing short of inspiring.
“On this trip into the past that lays the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things, you will meet a cast of new and lovable characters, as well as a few old favorites. We'd want to elaborate, but we won't because it's more exciting if you find out the narrative for yourself.
