Stephen S. Poloz is a Canadian banker who was born in 1955. He was the Bank of Canada's ninth Governor. He is also a member of the Bank for International Settlements' board of directors.
In July 2017, Poloz raised the key interest rate at the Bank of Canada to 0.75%. This was the first time that Canada's interest rates had gone up in seven years.

Stephen Poloz went to Canada's Queen's University at Kingston and got his bachelor's degree there in 1978. He chose economics as his major. In 1979, he got his master's degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario.

Poloz worked at the Bank of Canada from 1981 to 1994, when he left as head of the research department to become the managing editor of BCA Research. He worked there from 1994 to 1999.
Poloz started working for Export Development Canada in 1999, and in 2010 he became president and CEO of the company. He has been a visiting scholar at the “Economic Planning Agency” in Tokyo and at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC.
In 2014, Poloz went to the 62nd Annual Bilderberg Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the things they talked about was the situation in Ukraine. The Forum for International Trade Training gave Poloz the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) title as an honor.
He was the head of the Ottawa Economics Association in the past. He was put in charge of the Bank of Canada in 2013 for a seven-year term. The Bank of Canada said in December 2019 that he would not run for a second term after his first one ended in June 2020.
When Poloz's term as Governor ended in 2020, he joined Enbridge's board of directors. On August 1, 2020, Poloz became a special advisor for the law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, which is based in Toronto.
