Fans of science fiction have something to look forward to in 2022. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Daniels) and Severance have already won over audiences and hearts. Even though David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future is expected to make a splash at the Cannes Film Festival, Spiderhead has slipped in as an interesting side note.
Spiderhead is Joseph Kosinski’s creation (Tron: Legacy). Tron: Legacy and Oblivion established Kosinski as a household name early on, but he’s been patiently waiting for the long-delayed Top Gun: Maverick to be released. Standing ovations followed the Cannes premiere of Top Gun: Maverick. An honorary/surprise Palme d’Or–Cannes’ highest honor–went to the film’s star, Tom Cruise.
The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame), and Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), was released in March to positive reviews and is Netflix’s second sci-fi feature of the year.
The fun-for-the-whole-family action flick with echoes of classic Steven Spielberg films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. Spiderhead appears unsuitable for children. Spiderhead’s cast, release date, and plot summary are included in the information provided below. See the table for more details.
Possibly influenced by Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleurs,” the trailer, released on May 17, has a 1970s sci-fi vibe. “Your scientists were so consumed with whether or not they could, they never stopped to wonder if they should,” Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park) famously said.
What is the Plot of Spiderhead?
To better humanity, Spiderhead follows the topics of scientific study. “Escape from Spiderhead,” a short tale by George Saunders, is the film’s official synopsis, accompanied by the trailer.
In a futuristic prison ruled by a brilliant visionary who experiments on his subjects with mind-altering medicines, two inmates build a bond as they grapple with their pasts.
Claire Denis’ High Life was a novel in which inmates were built as makeshift spaceships and dispatched on a one-way trip to assist humanity and science. Of course, without the constraints of ethics, science will inevitably degenerate into an uncontrollable mass of crazy.
Following the release of Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, Spiderhead will be released a few weeks later. Spiderhead, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland), appears to be a dark comedy despite the team’s usual humorous flair.
Reese and Wernick are no strangers to Netflix, having written Ryan Reynolds and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground.
The Cast of Spiderhead
A scientist named Steve Abnesti is played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Abnesti provides experimental medications to inmates under regulated conditions to improve human health. When manipulating his captive test subjects’ psychological and emotional states, he appears calm and collected, as shown in the film’s trailer.
Netflix and Hemsworth are joining up again for Extraction 2, which concluded filming and is coming out sometime next year. Reuniting Hemsworth with filmmaker Taika Watiti (Thor: Ragnarok), the highly anticipated Marvel sequel will open in theaters on July 8, 2017. Thor: Love and Thunder are also on the horizon for Chris Hemsworth.
Since Thank You For Your Service and Only the Brave were both directed by Joseph Kosinski, Miles Teller (Whiplash) is returning to the big screen this year for the first time since 2017.
Teller teams up with Kosinski twice this year, both in Spiderhead and in Top Gun: Maverick. Teller takes on the role of Jeff, a key participant in Spiderhead’s research. At the Spiderhead facility, Jeff strikes a friendship with Abnesti and another inmate, Lizzy.
In the years after his last feature film, Teller has kept himself busy by participating in the Netflix miniseries Too Old to Die, Young, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive). His other acting credits include a film about the production of The Godfather and a music video for Taylor Swift.
Lizzy is performed by Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country) (Lovecraft Country). Steve Abnesti’s experiments on inmates continue to torment Lizzy. Smollett’s career took off in 2020 when he appeared in a slew of films and TV shows.
She had such a strong performance in Birds of Prey as Dinah Lance, nicknamed Black Canary, that she was offered a role in her spin-off series. Her portrayal of Letitia Lewis in the HBO adaptation of Lovecraft Country and an appearance in an episode of Jordan Peele’s (Get Out, Us) revival of The Twilight Zone both wowed fans.
Other cast members include Top Gun: Maverick Charles Parnell and The Dry’s BeBe Bettencourt and Mad Max: Fury Road star Nathan Jones and Tess Haubrich of Aliens.
Where To Watch Spiderhead
On June 17, Spiderhead will be available solely through Netflix. Spiderhead, unlike other Netflix movies like The Irishman and Don’t Look Up, will not have a limited theatrical release before or following its streaming launch.
For $15.49 a month, viewers can access HD content that is not compressed by 4KUHD, average 720p, or 1080p HD. While Netflix has hinted at a lower-cost, ad-supported subscription tier, standard-definition streaming is still available for $9.99 a month.
Netflix continues to have the highest subscriber base, earning the title of “King of Streaming.” The king’s crown is in jeopardy because of rising prices, a shift in consumer attitudes toward password sharing, and market fragmentation.
In addition to the original content and theatrical movies available for streaming much sooner, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Paramount+ have emerged as genuine contenders to the reigning queen thanks to their platforms’ parent companies’ extensive archives of old favorites.
