Almeida's fury is unleashed on Sofia and Saber in season 2 of Ganglands after he finds out that they've been doing business with his boss's son, Javier. Saber makes it through the shootout at their residence conducted by Almeida's forces, but Sofia doesn't make it.
Since his father's death, Javier, the son of Los Soles' boss, has been plotting to recruit Sofia and Saber into the family's cocaine business. Although Javier and Chris had been working together up to that point, the latter was tragically killed when Mehdi and his henchmen broke into his laboratory, stole his gems, and then fled.
Javier suffers an injury at the hands of Mehdi during the same theft. Now that Chris is gone and Javier is injured, Javier's father is going to make good on the deal his son made while he was alive. He pays a middleman to negotiate with Saber and Sofia on his behalf.
The Deal
According to Javier's father's new recruit, they didn't care about the issues Sofia and Saber had with Chris and already had plans to replace him. Chris had established connections with other cartels and was able to work with them effectively.
Javier's father was opposed to this since he had ambitions to make Los Soles the dominant European drug cartel. A friend of Javier's has offered Sofia and Saber ten percent of their profit from any drugs that pass through Antwerp.
All things considered, they are receiving treatment similar to that which Chris received. Sofia is hoping to continue negotiating. Instead, she is requesting a twenty percent share. This colleague is open to bargaining, but only if the demand is fair.
After that, Sofia explains that every other trafficker in Antwerp has connections to dockworkers. Contrarily, they are the sole ones involved in customs work. It's no secret to Javier or his dad that they were successful in doing so.
The advantage that this provides is exactly what Javier's dad has been hoping for. The associate is unable to provide the requested pay increase and thus informs the employees that his boss's right-hand man would be visiting soon to discuss a new compensation package.
Attack at Sofia and Saber's House
This time, Almeida, Javier's father's trusted right-hand man, has come to handle the affairs of the young man. When he learns that the associate has already begun negotiations with Sofia and Saber, he is dismayed.
There's something about this that Almeida doesn't want Sofia and Saber to be a part of. Almeida kills Javier's associate and frames Sofia and Saber for his death after discovering that Javier's father had given them a heads-up about this business.
Returning home, Saber is concerned that Javier's dad will go out and find someone else to make the deal with. As he questions whether or not what they did was appropriate, Sofia reassures him that they were.
They are able to exert influence thanks to their country's customs system. Associates of Javier's will be knocking on their door, promising at least 15% of the gain. Almeida's soldiers show up, but none of Javier's friends do.
Saber manages to drive off most of them, but not before witnessing one of them murder Sofia as she dressed her newborn child. Afterward, with Sofia's kid and a revolver, Saber stealthily leaves his own home.
Why Does Almeida Specifically Target Sofia & Saber?
It's later revealed that Almeida has plans on taking over Las Soles from Javier's dad one day. As long as Javier is still there, Almeida knows his fantasy will remain just that. Almeida keeps trying to get through to Javier's dad and convince him that he needs to be included in whatever decision is made.
To prove to Javier that his son is unable to make good business decisions, Almeida conspired with Saber and Sofia to frame them for the death of Javier's business associate.
As Javier's father defends his son's decision to join the organization by saying that Almeida can't blame him, Almeida collects his faithful men, assassinates Javier, and plots the assassination of Javier's father.
