He finished high school in 1974 & from 1974-1978, he went to college at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. Sinbad played basketball for 2 years while he was in college. After college, Sinbad joined the US Air Force & worked on KC-135 Stratotankers as a boom operator. He was part of the 384th Air Refueling Wing at Wichita, Kansas's McConnell Air Force Base.

During that time, he often went to downtown Wichita to do stand-up comedy. In 1981, he was a comedian & took part in the Air Force's Talent Contest. He often did bad things & went missing in action. Because of this, he was almost kicked out of the army without honour. He said that he was finally kicked out of the Air Force because he “parked his car in the wrong place.”
