Simon Cowell's Early Life
Simon Philip Cowell was born on the 7th of October, 1959, to Eric and Julie Cowell in London, England. Simon has a younger brother named Nicholas, as well as four half-brothers and half-sisters. He has three siblings: Michael and Tony from his mother's first marriage, and John and June from his father's second marriage.
In his own words, he grew up in the leafy suburbs of Hertfordshire, where he had a “privileged upbringing.” It was in Elstree, which was also known for its film and television studio, that Simon grew up, where he shared the same street as some illustrious neighbors from the film and television industry.
In Dover, Simon went to a boarding school where he spent his school days, which he despised and against which he rebelled. He even wrote a letter home to his parents in an attempt to make them feel guilty for sending him to the institution. He had been suspended at one point and dropped out of school as soon as he was able when he was sixteen.
Career in Music
EMI music hired Simon for his first job, which was as a runner at Elstree studios. When that job ended, Simon went to work as a mailroom boy at the record company. Simon became dissatisfied with his job as a mail carrier with little prospect of advancement, so he quit and briefly worked as an estate agent, which he despised.
A surprise phone call from EMI asked Simon to return to the company and take a position in a different department. Pete Waterman, who would go on to become Simon's mentor, was introduced to him at this event, and Simon has never forgotten his gratitude to him for helping him get his start in the music business.
When Simon left EMI, he attempted to form a working partnership with a former colleague named Ellis Rich; however, this failed to materialize, and the two parted company ways.
It was through this collaboration with Iain Burton that Fanfare Records was established. As a result, Fanfare needed an artist to collaborate with, and Simon discovered Sinitta. He signed her to the label and she went on to have a number two hit with the song “So Macho,” which was followed by the song “Toyboy,” which Simon had written with Pete Waterman, who had previously worked with him at EMI.
There were several other hits that followed throughout the 1980s, and things were starting to look up…
The X Factor UK
Simon launched the hugely successful X Factor in the United Kingdom in 2004, and the show continues to hold the prestigious position of being the most-watched show on television today. The most well-known stars to emerge from the show to date are Leona Lewis, who will be remembered for her performance of ‘Summertime,' and One Direction, who have achieved phenomenal global success as a result of their appearance on the show.
The judges have changed over the years, but the show's production has grown in size and quality with each passing year, and we've seen some of the biggest names in music make guest appearances. Who knows what other television production has garnered such widespread attention. The X Factor is high-quality entertainment at its finest.
Britain's Got Talent
Britain's Got Talent premiered on television in 2007, and Simon is once again involved in the production as well as serving as a judge on the show. Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan were also members of the judging panel, in addition to him. Piers has since left the show, and Simon has only appeared on the live shows once, in 2011 to be exact.
During 2011, we were treated to the introduction of two new judges: Michael McIntyre and David Hasselhoff, who was previously a judge on the American version of the show.
With David Walliams, Amanda Holden, and Alesha Dixon on the panel for the live shows in 2011, Simon returned to the panel for the 2012 series on a permanent basis. The format of Got Talent has become popular all over the world, and there is a possibility that a World's Got Talent competition will be launched in the future.
