STAR WARS movies may be cursed. A shift from cinema to television seemed inevitable after a series of dramatic power shifts behind the scenes left the Skywalker saga in a fractured state.
When Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins’ project Rogue Squadron was placed on hold because of scheduling issues, this move became even more apparent.
However, may the gloom and doom have been overblown? That’s what a brand-new Disney paper suggests.
Due to a postponement, Rogue Squadron was initially scheduled to be released on December 23, 2023. There are all kinds of movies on the upcoming Disney release calendar for February 25, 2022, from the meta-backstory Lightyear to Black Panther 2 and a new Indiana Jones film.
Rogue Squadron, which is still scheduled for a December 2023 release, comes in third place after “Untitled Marvel” and “Untitled Disney Animation.”
Star Wars could be in jeopardy. Rogue Squadron’s production had been put on hold, but that was the extent of the initial postponement statement. Is it possible for Lucasfilm to meet its original deadline even if work begins later?
Since Rogue Squadron is based on a dogfighting-centric plot, it’s hard to believe that it will require less post-production and VFX than a typical Star Wars film.
Another possibility is that the Rogue Squadron delay was announced out of an abundance of caution, and it was not necessary. For a picture more than a year in the future, it’s an odd marketing ploy, but there’s value in keeping expectations low.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Movie Plot
The Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie isn’t just going to be an adaptation of the Rogue Squadron video game and the Rogue Squadron books. But don’t be alarmed.
According to Patty Jenkins, who spoke to IGN, “Incorporating elements from both the games and the books, we’re creating something fresh. Much has been said and understood about the importance of all these things, yet it’s still an original story to me. It excites me to no end.”

As she told the AP, the movie will “respect” the novels and games that came before, but it must also be brought “to a new age since we have to tell a new tale with it.’
“Just brad” on the @Jedi4Liberty(opens in new tab) Twitter account alleges that Michael Stackpole told him that Jenkins “had been in contact with him early on” when he was working on the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
Since Wedge Antilles formed Rogue Squadron’s elite cadre of pilots, we should expect a nod to Antilles’ work in the film (which Luke Skywalker captained). The Rogue Squadron books were a part of the Star Wars Extended Universe, which was essentially erased when it was announced(opens in new tab) that “Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience.”
In the same announcement, the people behind Star Wars stated that “Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe,” which is how Jenkins will be able to refer to what is essential without being fully tethered to the novels.
As THR quotes director Rian Johnson saying, the picture may also act as a launching pad for the post-Skywalker Saga: “As the next chapter of Star Wars, we have a lot of responsibility and an opportunity to start something new. I’m looking forward to it. It’s a lot of fun in that regard.”
Keep your X-Wing strapped in for a bit of time since we’ll have to wait. The release date of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron has been set for December 22, 2023.
However, getting there has been a bit of a challenge. Production delays have been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, which has since been taken down. As The Hollywood Reporter’s Matthew Belloni reported in a newsletter, this was the result of “creative disputes” related to the script.
