Dianne Emiel Goldman was born on June 22, 1933, in San Francisco, California, to a Jewish father and Jewish mother. A former model, Betty raised her two younger sisters while Leon worked as a surgeon.

In 1980, she married Richard C. Blum, an investment banker, for the third time. In February of 2022, he passed away after a long marriage to her.
