On December 18, 1954, Liotta was born in Newark. He was six months old when he was adopted by Mary, a township clerk, and Alfred, the proprietor of an auto-parts store. Both of his adoptive parents' families were from Italy and Scotland. Alfred was the head of HR at a major company and the head of a local Democratic Party chapter. Each of his adoptive parents had a failed run for local office, and he remembered going to parades to hand out brochures for his dad's campaign.
Both Liotta and her sister Linda were adopted. Claiming to have known he was adopted at a young age, he shared this information with his kindergarten class in the form of a show-and-tell.
