Early life and Education

After his family relocated to Ilsan District in Goyang when Kim Nam-Joon was four or five, the South Korean actor was born on September 12, 1994, in Dongjak District.

In addition to his younger sister, he is the older of two brothers. In his early years, RM relied heavily on his mother and the American comedy Friends to help him acquire the language.  At school, he was an avid poet who frequently won accolades for his work.

One year after posting his work to an internet poetry website, he gained a fair amount of attention. Thus, RM first declared a desire to get into publishing before changing his mind.   When he was twelve, he spent four months in New Zealand study.

After hearing Epik High's “Fly” in fifth grade when he was 11 years old, RM became interested in hip-hop music.

After listening to the song and feeling relieved, he determined to learn more about the genre. RM's initial exposure to lyricism came from his high school English teacher, who exposed him to the music of American rapper Eminem.

Sharing lyrics that he thought were “awesome” with pals was something he did on a regular basis. He began creating songs at that time, claiming that his poetry became lyrics when it was paired with music.

His first self-composed recording was made with Adobe Audition (then named Cool Edit) in 2007, while he was a freshman in middle school, and he performed in his first concert in 2008.

Under the alias Runch Randa, RM became increasingly involved in the underground Korean hip-hop scene, releasing several tracks and working with other artists such as Zico.
