The Queen's Gambit was an unexpected hit for Netflix last fall. It had a strong, self-destructive lead character, a great director who made chess a thrilling game, and beautiful sets and costumes from the time period.
The seven-part limited series is based on a book by Walter Tevis from 1983, with only a few changes. It has been nominated for two Golden Globes.
In The Queen's Gambit, the main character, Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, is a girl who grew up in an orphanage and found a spark by playing chess in the basement. But when she was young, she got hooked on pills, which was a problem.

Another author, Eric Van Lustbader, was going to write the next 11 books in the series. As for the whole “limited series” thing, HBO's Big Little Lies was also based on a book and billed as a miniseries, but it got a second season that no one expected.

Taylor-Joy told Deadline that she had an idea for a future story: “It would be interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother now that she's clean and more aware of the things that bring her down.”

He added, “We thought the series ended on a good note, and we'd let the audience figure out what comes next for Beth Harmon. Fans have asked for more on my Twitter feed, but nothing has changed. [Director and part-maker] Scott and I are both very happy that Beth's story is now over.”
Still, it wouldn't be the first time that a miniseries based on a book got a second season that wasn't planned. Just look at HBO's Big Little Lies. But it's easy to say that there won't be a second season in 2021, but it could happen in 2022.
