We concur with many others who have expressed mild criticism. There is far too much unnecessary adult sexual innuendo (or its aftermath: Puss sneaking out on his “conquest”) and far too much violence directed at young children (though I know that many parents in my area are entirely unconcerned about it).
You will enjoy it, watch it about five times a month, and become interested in the animated series (sigh). The good news is that she missed the s*x references entirely, or perhaps the questions are still brewing. On the good side, I suppose, it can present chances to discuss one's values about sex; be ready for it. Younger children will probably ignore everything.
What's The Story?
In this Shrek prequel, viewers are introduced to the “outlaw” cat Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas), who was once the hero of his small town (earning his signature boots as a reward for saving the city from disaster) but is now known as a criminal after unwittingly taking part in a heist with his orphanage best friend, Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis).
The two friends team up to steal three magic beans from the cunning Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris) to plant the tree and gain access to the golden goose and her magical golden eggs. They first meet through Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), a cat burglar to who Puss is immediately attracted.
Once the goose is in place, however, Puss understands that Humpty has other intentions, and Kitty is forced to decide between her planned escapade and her heart.
Is It Any Good?
Banderas gives a perfect leading performance in this entertaining animated adventure. PUSS IN BOOTS is unquestionably Puss' story, with the occasional zinger from the supporting cast, in contrast to Shrek, which is more of an ensemble with a form of outrageous fairy tale supporting characters.
Fans of Banderas and Hayek will enjoy the reunion of their Desperado co-stars and the funny dialogue between the horrifyingly repulsive Jack and Jill. Thorton and Sedaris voice them with smokey Southern drawls.
Puss is renowned for leaving both friends and opponents stunned with his endearingly large eyes, which is how the entire movie makes you feel. That kitten is tempting with his charms, whether you're a fetching animated feline or an enthralled viewer.
Like Zorro, Banderas has created a likable figure who is naughty yet righteous, sensual but kind, and unforgettable by milking his Spanish accent for all it's worth.
Although there aren't as many new fairy tale characters in this spin-off as in the Far Far Away stories, it nevertheless holds its own with a fun and endearing journey that both children and adults will love.
What Do Parents Need to Know?
Parents should be aware that this Shrek spin-off contains mild innuendo, cartoonish violence, and one character's death. Tense/perilous moments include many duels, an elaborate “dance-off,” a cannon/gunfight, a “monster” chase, and a character who willingly plummets to death.

There are a few double-entendre gags, numerous references to Puss being a “lover,” and a humorous exchange between the wicked Jack and Jill about starting a family.
Generally, this animated story is geared toward children of all ages. However, families with adopted children should be aware that the protagonist is once again an orphan. A few parts are slightly more intense in 3-D but aren't particularly dramatic, so you won't miss much if you watch it in 2D.
