How Did Pop Smoke Die?

On February 19, 2020, Jackson was renting a house in Hollywood Hills, California, from The Real Housewives Teddi Mellencamp and her husband, Edwin Arroyave, via Airbnb. Five hooded males, including one wearing a ski mask and carrying a weapon, got into the residence through a second-story balcony as Jackson was taking a shower at 4:30 a.m.

The invaders threatened to kill a woman by holding a gun to her head. Following an altercation, the woman heard the males fire Jackson three times. A call from the East Coast alerted the LAPD to the house invasion. Six minutes later, police arrived at the house and discovered Jackson with several gunshot wounds.

Because Jackson was associated with the Crips, the LAPD initially thought that his death was gang-related. However, the LAPD later determined that his death was the result of a botched home invasion. Jackson's body was initially scheduled to be buried at Cypress Hills Cemetery, but the location was eventually changed to Green-Wood Cemetery.

In juvenile court, the two minors were charged with murder and robbery. Because California law required a minor to be at least 16 at the time of the offense, the 15-year-old could not be tried as an adult, and the 17-year-old could not be tried as an adult either, thanks to George Gascón's policy of keeping all minors in juvenile court.
