Payday 3 Will Be Set In A Thriving New York City

After years of anticipation, Payday fans have finally received some new information about Payday 3. Several new details were revealed during the Payday 10th Anniversary Livestream event, which was hosted by publisher Starbreeze Studios and developer Overkill Software.

According to director Erik Wonnevi, the action in Payday 3 will take place in a “living, enormous representation” of New York City. When compared to the original Payday, which took place primarily in a fictional “Newport City” as well as Miami, Payday 2 takes place primarily in the boroughs of Washington, DC.

Characters such as Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf will return in Payday 3, which will take place several years after the events of Payday 2. They will be returning because they have decided to leave retirement and return to their criminal ways.

Payday 3

Since the release of Payday 2 in 2013, technology has advanced significantly, and it appears that Starbreeze is utilizing this advancement for gameplay purposes. It is expected that the gang will benefit from the latest technological advances provided by software giants, cryptocurrency, mass surveillance, and even the dark web.

In addition, concept art revealed during the presentation depicts a fictional New York bank named “Gold & Sharke Incorporated” which could serve as a mission location in the future. A few police officers can be seen patrolling in the distance, while the characters from Payday 3 can be seen casing the building with their masks on. As armored SWAT officers surround the bank's front steps and the gang fires from the top of the steps, the group's heist reaches its climax in a second image shown below.

While Starbreeze did not demonstrate any actual gameplay or cinematics from Payday 3 during its event, we do know that the game is being developed in the Unreal Engine, as opposed to the Grin engine used in the previous two installments of the series. Specifically, Wonnevi stated that the new engine will allow players to step into the “living, breathing” fantasy of New York and watch as the city “flip” into chaos and reacts in response to their decisions as members of a heist crew.

In March of this year, Starbreeze announced that Payday 3 would be released simultaneously on PC and consoles in 2023, “with additional content and functionalities planned for long beyond the original release date,” according to the company.
