This is the first time Paris Hilton has spoken publicly about her abortion.
The 42-year-old businesswoman recently discussed the significance of utilizing her platform to support reproductive rights, and she opened up about having an abortion when she was in her early 20s in a new interview.
“This was something I didn't want to talk about since there was so much shame surrounding it”, Paris said in an interview with Glamour UK. A young me was unprepared for it.
Paris continued by saying that the Supreme Court's June 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the right to an abortion prompted her to come forward with her abortion story.
“I believe it to be crucial. So many politics, yet it's a woman's body,” Paris explained. What good would it do to make a law on that? What you do with your body is entirely up to you, and I respect that.
“It's mind-boggling to me that they're making regulations about what you do with your reproductive health,” Paris went on, “because if it were the other way around with the boys, it would not be this way at all.”
During the interview, Paris also discussed the decision to have a surrogate carry and deliver her and her husband Carter Reum's baby Phoenix.
Hilton has become an activist against institutionalized child abuse, despite her fame for her role in “The Simple Life” and her “dumb blonde reputation.”
Hilton suffered sexual, physical, and emotional abuse at the hands of the staff at the Provo Canyon School in Utah and other behavioral modification programs between the ages of 16 and 18.
She went on to work with lawmakers to pass legislation like SB127, or the Troubled Teen Industry Act, which she described in her upcoming documentary “This Is Paris.”
Hilton may have found some solace in being able to help others through their suffering, but she is still affected by the horror she endured. The hotel heiress claims she opted for surrogacy when she realized that being pregnant would bring back painful memories.
“I'm just so afraid, I believe, again leading back to Provo of even being in a doctor's office, just everything that,” she said. She says she frequently had blood drawn and received injections.
Paris claims that it was the trauma she experienced as a child, rather than her age, that led her to decide to become a surrogate. Even being in the same room as a laboring woman on “The Simple Life” was a traumatic experience for me.
While having a family is something I've always wanted to accomplish, the logistics of which have always been a bit of a challenge for me. Really, I'm just petrified. Both giving birth and dying to terrify me more than anything else.
The “Stars Are Blind” singer kept her choice to conceive children through a surrogate a secret from the public and even her closest friends and family.
“My life has been so public, I wanted to keep it private,” she explained. It was difficult to contain my excitement at this new development, but I managed to keep it to myself for the time being. So it was especially special for me to have this time with Carter.
Late in 2019, she began dating Reum, and by November 2021, the two were married.
