On the Come Up Release Date: Plot | Cast | Trailer | Reviews | and Everything We Know So Far!

Twenty years after 8 Mile won an Academy Award, the narrative of a young female battle rapper torn between loyalty to her culture and the allure of commercialized mainstream rap is told in On the Come Up. Actress Sanaa Lathan makes her directorial debut with this film, which is based on Angie Thomas's novel The Hate U Give.

Battle rap has been an integral yet marginal part of Hip Hop culture from 2002's 8 Mile through 2017's indie-film Bodied, which Eminem also produced. On the Come Up aspires to convey the competitive sport that combines improvised theatre and outright disdain between two opponents.
