The Plot

The story will center on two rancher siblings trying to make sense of a lot of nothing while doing a lot of anything. When a piece of falling debris kills their father, but the sky keeps tearing their ranch apart, they start to believe that aliens are at work.

They work with a tech salesperson and a documentarian to try and solve this bizarre riddle.

As a slice of actually-interesting Americana that is rarely studied, I'm usually down for stories about Black cowboys. Still, seeing that classic Peele flair will be extra entertaining. Yet at what price?

Nope: According To Jordan Peele; “Black People In A Flying Saucer Film” Explores Race

Jordan Peele has shared additional information about his enigmatic movie Nope, including what it could mean for viewers to watch a primarily Black cast deal with a “flying saucer movie” that “honors terror” in novel ways.

The director of the upcoming film, which stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun in a story that appears to center on UFOs terrorizing the populace of a rural mountain town, told Today that while nothing is standard in the filmmaker's body of work, he considers the horror genre to be a part of it.

It's about several things, according to Peele. “Making a show was the first thing I gravitated toward while creating this movie. Because I believed that if we can experience the feeling of being in the presence of something “other,” if we can believe that it is real, then it is an immersive experience worth going to the movies for.”

Later, he responded when asked how Nope's plot integrates racial commentary.

The race is everywhere we look, so I don't think it's possible to produce a movie without it being about race, according to Peele. “You can't just put Black folks in a flying saucer movie and expect the same thing to happen. It isn't. There is a different kind of connection.”

“I think that my race has affected my entire artistic path,” he continued, “and part of it has been trying to reconcile the box, the box that this country puts people of color in, and wanting to break out of that box.”
