What Is New Amsterdam About?
When it stays focused on storylines that include people, the show is really good. The show tries way too hard to depict the unrealistic idea that everything has a happy ending & it fails spectacularly.
However, there are a few unfortunate things that leap out at you & at first, you try to ignore them or ignore yourself… Then they begin to pile up, but for me, it all comes crashing down when the psychiatrist says in a deadpan voice that you absolutely must see them.
This is an advanced audience medical drama. Real medicine & actual doctors happen in this room. The genuine lives & emotional struggles of the main characters are only fleetingly touched on, but they are there nonetheless.
It's also underwritten exceptionally well, leaving room for the audience to project their own emotions onto the story. Max's pain is so severe that it may be irreparable. Sharpe's lack of character development as she floats up & down the hospital's hierarchy.
Floyd's tantrums over his fiancee's career decisions, the drug-addicted doctor's implausible behavior & yes, Riker's episodes, all scream incoherence & poor writing. Ultimately, “We've exhausted all other possibilities!”
I have no idea what could have possibly happened to ruin such a great show. Sexual activity during the physiotherapy session, however, was reminiscent of “Grey's Anatomy” at its worst.
It's also annoying when Max talks in fragments and just stares blankly at you. Vijay is the most believable of the main characters as he deals with the film's overly emotional soap opera plot.
