Mel Tucker, head coach of the Michigan State Spartans football team, and Jim Salgado, the former safeties coach for the Buffalo Bills, were revealed as the new cornerback's coach & defensive coordinator, respectively, on Thursday evening, following another disappointing season for the secondary.
Tucker said in a statement that Jim Salgado is a great football coach with a lot of experience. What he knows about football blows my mind. Together, he and one of my role models, Leslie Frazier, coached some of the best NFL defenses while in Buffalo.
Jim also worked as a college coordinator, where he made a significant impact & led Princeton to two conference championships. He has extensive professional networks & can reach out to potential candidates around the country.
I'm looking forward to seeing him and Harlon Barnett pair up in the secondary because of their wonderful rapport. Salgado was the safeties coach for the Bills for the first and only time last season after working for the team for six years.
His prior experience includes serving as a defensive assistant for three years and a nickel back for two. With him at the helm, Buffalo's defense consistently ranked in the top half of the League.
The safety Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, as well as the cornerback Tre'Davious White, all had successful seasons under his direction, and all three were named to the Pro Bowl. He spent 22 years coaching at the collegiate level before joining the Bills. From 2010 to 2016, he studied at Princeton University.

For 3 seasons, he was Hofstra's starting cornerback. The defensive back play was a major concern following the Spartans' breakthrough 2021 season, but despite Tucker's increased emphasis on coaching them, no substantial solutions emerged last season.
As Harlon Barnett's secondary coach, Salgado will be joining the defensive back staff. Since pass-rush specialist Brandon Jordan has gone to join the coaching staff of the Seattle Seahawks, there is now an open spot on the team.
